Office History
Sheriffs of Charlotte County
Charlotte County was formed from the southwestern portion of DeSoto County on April 23, 1921. The county was named after the Bay of Charlotte Harbor, which had been named "Carlos Bay" by the Spanish in 1565. The English later renamed the area Charltote Harbor in tribute to Queen Charlotte Sophia, the wife of King George III.
Constitutional offices, including the Office of the Sheriff, were established for the newly formed county. The first person to hold the office of Sheriff was James H. Lipscomb. Read more about the Sheriffs of Charlotte County below:
