Technical Support, Network and Security Specialist
Special Assignment Under the general supervision of the MIS Supervisor, the Technical Support, Network, and Security Specialist is responsible for performing technical functions related to hardware and software solutions and maintenance. The incumbent should demonstrate technical knowledge of data systems security procedures along with an understanding of computer and network security; to include, but not limited to, firewall administration, encryption technologies, and network protocols. This position will also be responsible for providing end-user support to various stakeholders throughout the Sheriff's Office. The Technical Support, Network, and Security Specialist should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as the ability to exercise independent judgment and be self-motivated.
PAY GRADE: 10 ($46,454)+ Supplemental pay for education if applicable.
Distinguishing Features In addition to general technical support services, this position requires extensive knowledge of networking systems and associated architecture, best practices, security standards, protocols and firewall systems.
Examples of Duties Analyze, test, install, document and maintain computer application programs and network security policies and procedures. Develop guidelines and procedures outlining the use of computer systems and associated equipment. Ensure integrity and confidentiality of sensitive information. Maintain network infrastructure in support of workstations, servers, and printers. Perform security audits, network risk assessments, and analyses to the Sheriff's Office network and systems. Prevent and detect network intrusion from internal and external threats. Provide on-call support for Sheriff's Office systems, software, maintenance, and repair of equipment. Research attempted breaches of data security and rectifying security weaknesses. Take a leading role in project management meetings and implementation processes. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to deal tactfully, effectively, and equitably with various stakeholders throughout the Sheriff's Office. Knowledge of Cisco switches, routers and IP telephony. Knowledge of storage networks including fibre channel and NAS systems. Knowledge of firewall systems and endpoint protection. Knowledge of server virtualization systems including VMware and Hyper-V. Ability to effectively manage priorities and schedule time appropriately. Ability to operate all equipment listed in the EQUIPMENT USED section. Ability to provide technical instruction and perform technical writing within the scope of Sheriff's Office Information Technology parameters. Ability to take the lead in managing Sheriff's Office projects, to include conducting end user meetings. Ability to manage server systems, to include Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, and Microsoft Systems Management Server. Ability to maintain and protect confidential information. Ability to perform intrusion detection analyses and threat assessments. Knowledge of monitoring systems and network security and the ability to respond to security incidents. Skill in troubleshooting, analyzing, and solving network architecture and providing recommendations for systems fixes and enhancements.
Education or Equivalent Experience Required Minimum four (4) years' experience in the management and operation of information systems and network security. Extensive experience configuring, managing and installing Cisco networking hardware preferred. Must not be on any of the following types of probationary status: new hire, rehire, disciplinary probation. Possession of a valid driver's license. Successful attainment of the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or other industry standard network certification designation is preferred. Successful completion of a four (4) year degree from an accredited college or university in a computer science or related field is preferred

Physical Effort Required Great deal of finger dexterity. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of equipment. Occasional standing or walking for long periods, mostly bending and reaching. NOTE: Members who have direct contact with inmates are required to have a medical exam / screening which includes a PPD placed (TB screening) prior to job placement. Any positives on the PPD will require further evaluations by the Health Department. Re-examination shall be given according to a defined need or schedule. This requirement is meant to protect the member, the Sheriff's Office, and the inmates from any physical condition which might impact the ability of the member to perform their job in a safe and efficient manner.
Working Conditions Driving to various Sheriff's Office locations, at times during inclement weather conditions. Typical office or similar setting which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Work may require shift work, flexible hours, days and holidays which may include nights and weekends. The incumbent will share a rotation with other members and will be expected to be on-call a week at a time in addition to their regular daily schedule.
