Part Time Landscape and Groundskeeper

Special Assignment

Primary function of this part time job is to coordinate ground maintenance and landscaping activities for all County property under the jail lawn maintenance program. Responsibilities include training, assigning and supervising inmates to projects such as road side clean up details and work area inmate projects, developing and overseeing landscaping plans, and ground improvement projects. Employees in this job supervise inmate crews and ensure that work assignments are accomplished.  Work duties include inspecting assigned areas weekly to insure compliance with established safety and sanitary regulations. This position is non-considered essential under the CCSO Emergency Plan. Work is performed under the supervision of the Support Services Assistant Supervisor and is reviewed for results and compliance with regulatory and code requirements.


Examples of Duties

Coordinates and supervises inmate workers on assigned tasks and inspecting of work for desired quality. Diagnoses problems, recommends repairs, and requests supplies as necessary. Responds to emergencies and conducts routine preventive maintenance to include lawn equipment, including oil changes, brake adjustments, tune-ups and tire repair. Requires use of riding mower, gas-powered and hand held weed whips, chain saw. Performs other related work as required. Inspects equipment for safety concerns. Trains inmates on proper and safe operation of all assigned equipment. Maintains records and reports on materials and equipment used. Uses specialized tools, equipment and testing devices related to the work. Uses manuals and guides as required in repair and maintenance of various equipment Recommends changes of facility to meet the operational needs. Transport and Supervise inmate work crews for all assigned details.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to supervise the work of an inmate work crew with in the established guidelines set forth by the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office policy and procedures. Knowledge of general grounds and the care, maintenance and use of tools and equipment used in the work. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations applicable to equipment maintenance and repair. Ability to operate all equipment listed in the EQUIPMENT USED section. Knowledge of FMJS and CCSO policies. Ability to detect and locate improper operating practices and malfunctions in equipment and recommend effective solutions. Ability to lift and maneuver the ramp to the back of the trailer to unload equipment. Ability to diagnose problems and recommend repairs. Ability to analyze problems and recognize safety warnings. Ability to read and understand manuals and safety guides associated with the work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to keep routine records and fill out standard forms.


Education or Equivalent Experience Required

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Considerable experience in operation and maintenance of lawn mowers and lawn equipment. Two years of experience in general grounds and lawn maintenance or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Florida DL required.

Physical Effort Required

Repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching and standing for long periods of time. May be required to lift/move up to 50 pounds regularly. Position frequently works in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather-related heat and cold, rain.  Job requires standing for long periods of time. 

NOTE: All employees who have direct inmate contact are required to have a medical exam/screening which includes a PPD (TB screening) prior to job assignment. Any positives on the PPD will require further evaluations by the Health Department. Re-examination shall be given according to a defined need or schedule. This requirement is to protect the employee, the agency and the inmates from any physical condition that might impact the ability of the employee to perform their job in a safe and efficient manner.

Working Conditions

May often work outdoors in all weather and on uneven terrain, in shop/garage structures where fumes, vapors, grease, oil, noise and dust are prevalent; or inside with equipment where conditions often are very noisy, dusty and greasy. Some exposure to verbally abusive and physically threatening individuals. Noise level ranges from quiet to loud, but is normally quiet to moderate. Medium exposure to injuries due to frequent use of electrical and mechanical equipment and tools; must follow all safety requirements carefully. Direct inmate contact. May be exposed to airborne particles, fertilizers, insecticides and other chemicals.

Hours of work are between 8-5 Monday through Saturday depending on the weather and assignment.  Part time weekly hours range from 24 to max of 30 hours a week.
