Major Crimes Unit

The Major Crime Unit is made up of a group of experienced, highly trained, highly motivated and dedicated and men and women who primarily investigate crimes against persons. These investigators have previous experience in investigations and apply their talents and experience to solve some of the most high profile offenses in Charlotte County. The types of offenses this unit investigates include some of the most violent and heinous crimes found under Florida Law.

The Major Crimes Unit conducts death investigation, including Homicides, suicides and other unattended or suspicious deaths and missing persons under suspicious circumstances. The unit is responsible for responding to and investigating other serious crimes such as sex crimes, armed robberies, bank robberies, kidnappings, carjackings, and home invasions. The detectives assigned to this unit also work closely with the Forensic Unit during the processing of the various scenes where the crimes occurred in order to have firsthand knowledge of any evidence discovered that can be associated to any potential suspect(s).

The Major Crimes detectives work very closely with other units within the Sheriff’s Office. The individuals who perpetrate these major offenses usually began their criminal careers committing either property crimes or drug offenses. Therefore this close working relationship between the Major Crime detectives, the detectives assigned to the District Investigation Section and the Narcotics Units is very important in solving cases.
