Mission Statement
The function of the Major Crimes Unit is to accomplish justice by determining the accurate detection of the offender and by making it possible in a trial to sustain the State's burden of criminal proof. The goal of the Major Crimes Unit is to protect life and property from the criminal element. When crimes do occur it is necessary for the Major Crimes Unit to determine the perpetrator and his/her locations. Thus, criminal investigation becomes an integral and most important part of law enforcement.
Responsibilities
Major Crimes Unit will investigate all homicides, fire related death, aggravated battery where there is a likelihood of death, armed robberies, rape, felony child abuse, kidnapping for ransom, kidnapping children under thirteen years of age, armed burglaries, burglaries where a battery has taken place, and thefts over one hundred thousand dollars.
"NO GREATER HONOR will ever be bestowed on an officer or a more profound duty imposed on him than when he is entrusted with the investigation of the death of a human being.
It is his or her duty to find the facts, regardless of color or creed, without prejudice, and to let no power on earth deter him from presenting these facts to the court without regard to personality."
