The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol is staffed with three full time deputies, who cover area consists of approximately 126 square miles of
waterways. Those areas include patrolling Charlotte Harbor, the Peace River, Myakka River, Lemon Bay, Gasparilla Sound and numerous small backwaters. Jurisdiction extends 9 miles
off shore in the Gulf of Mexico. The Marine patrol Unit also responds to emergencies on the barrier islands of Palm, Don Pedro, and Little Gasparilla.
The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol was established at the request of local residents, marina operators and area boaters. The objective of this
specialized unit is to enforce boating laws regarding safe operation and required equipment, provide aid or assistance to boaters in distress, and promote water safety through educational programs.
Marine Patrol duties include enforcement of boating safety and resource laws, investigation of boating accidents, water search and rescue operations, identifying and/or
removal of navigational hazards, and addressing vessel operation complaints and concerns. Marine deputies work closely with other agencies such as the United States Coast
Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, local law enforcement agencies and various yachting and water enthusiast organizations.
On March 27th, 2009, Sheriff Bill Cameron implemented the Marine Patrol Volunteer Services Unit. This patrol supplements the law enforcement efforts of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s
Office on the waterways and enhances relationships with the community. Volunteers within this unit operate in a non-law enforcement capacity.
