Major Mark Caro

Major Caro began his career in law enforcement as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff in 1979. He became a full time Deputy Sheriff in 1980 and was assigned to patrol duties in the Englewood area. He also assisted in the operation and maintenance the Sheriff’s Office patrol vessel moored in that area. It was during this time he participated in training in marine law enforcement. He remained assigned to the Englewood area through October 1987 attaining the rank of Deputy First Class.

Upon promotion to the rank of Corporal Caro was reassigned to the Patrol Division, responsible for the remainder of the county, based out of the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters in Punta Gorda.

In 1990 Caro was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned the supervision of a patrol squad in Englewood. Duties consisted of supervision of the patrol squad, desk sergeant, and the overall law enforcement operations of the patrol district.

Caro was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant in 1995 and assigned the duties of District I Commander. In 1996 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with the same assigned duties. During the next seven years he supervised the District I Office and all law enforcement operations in West Charlotte County. These included the Police Athletic League, Marine Patrol Unit, Boca Grande Deputy, and Barrier Island Deputy. It was Caro who obtained the grant funding that was used to purchase the Marine Patrol equipment and vessels we have today.

In April 2003 Caro was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned as the Commander of the Operations Bureau. This assignment consisted of overall command of the Patrol Division, K9 Unit, Traffic Unit and Marine Patrol Unit. His responsibilities in the Patrol Division included the four (4) District Offices including their Community Service Aides, Community Policing Officers and civilian support staff.

Caro was promoted to the rank of Major in February 2005 and assigned as the Commander of the newly organized Bureau of Law Enforcement. As a result of this promotion, Major Caro’s responsibilities changed to include all those of the Investigations Division and Aviation Section in addition to those of the Patrol Division.

Major Caro recently graduated from Senior Leadership Program of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Criminal Justice Executive Institute. He is also currently enrolled in college level classes at Edison Community College.
