The Mounted Patrol is a specialized, voluntary, part-time unit within the patrol division. Members of the Mounted Patrol are full-time deputy sheriffs, Corrections personnel, or reserve deputy sheriff's who own their own horses.
A Mounted Patrol team can patrol areas inaccessible to a motorized police officer. The Mounted Patrol is utilized for crowd control during special events, assists in patrolling for escaped prisoners, assists in search and rescue operations, and issues citations for violations of county ordinances and state laws while on patrol. The Mounted Patrol is of high visibility and serves as an important deterrent in the community.
They are seen throughout the county at community events. The Mounted Patrol Unit is often found at the middle and high schools in the county in an effort to educate and establish a relationship with young people.
