Lt. Randall (Randy) Horner began his career in Law Enforcement as a Charlotte County Reserve Deputy
Sheriff in 1985. He became a full time Deputy Sheriff in January of 1987 and was assigned to Road Patrol within the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda areas. He became a Detective in 1988
and was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit.
Lt. Horner was promoted to Corporal within the Criminal Investigations Unit in 1991 and was assigned to the Englewood area. Due to restructuring of the Sheriff’s Office
he was transferred to the Road Patrol as an assistant supervisor within the Murdock area in 1992.
Lt. Horner was promoted to Sergeant in June of 1995 and was assigned to the Road Patrol within the Englewood area. He was transferred to supervise the Criminal Investigations
Unit within the Port Charlotte area in 1997. He transferred to back to the Murdock area to supervise the Road Patrol in 1998.
He served in the capacity of Road Patrol Sergeant within the Murdock area until being promoted to Watch Commander/Lieutenant in March of 2004. As a Watch Commander, he was assigned
to the Bureau of Law Enforcement and oversaw the daily operations of the Sheriff’s Office.
In May 2008, Lt. Horner was transferred to command the Field Operations Section, which included the K9 Unit, Traffic Unit and SWAT. In 2009,
this section was changed to the Special Operations Section which includes the K9 Unit, Traffic Safety Team, Marine Patrol, Environmental Investigations and the Warrants squad. This change
is part of the re-construction under Sheriff, Bill Cameron.
