District 1 - District 2 - District 3 - District 4 - Civilian Ride-Along Program

Each district has one Lieutenant to oversee the administrative and operational functions of the district. There are four road patrol sergeants, one sergeant for the criminal investigation unit, four road patrol corporals, three criminal investigation unit detectives, and the remaining deputies comprise the basic road patrol unit. The road patrol unit is where new recruits will begin a rewarding and challenging career. The patrol sergeant and corporal for every shift are responsible for acting as a liaison between the uniformed deputies and the office administration, as well as supervising the patrol unit on the street.

The primary responsibility of the Road Patrol Unit is to provide quality protection and services for the citizens and visitors of Charlotte County. The uniformed patrol deputy is often the first contact an individual encounters when a crisis occurs. Our uniformed deputies undergo extensive training and are required to pass an extensive firearm qualification course at least once a year.

This division is operational twenty-four hours a day, three hundred sixty five days a year. The patrol division is prepared to provide emergency response to life threatening situations and non-emergency assistance to a variety of criminal, traffic, medical, civil matters and natural disasters that may impact the overall quality of life. The deputies are responsible for assisting in the service of civil papers and warrants, as well as responding to calls for service. The deputies also assist the various fire and rescue units in the community.

The patrol division acts to prevent the occurrence of street crimes through visible proactive patrol; to respond swiftly to all calls for assistance; to improve the criminal apprehension rate by conducting thorough preliminary on scene investigations when appropriate; to reduce traffic congestion and accident hazards through systematic enforcement of traffic laws; to respond to motor vehicle accidents and render aid to victims; to assist citizens in dealing with legal, medical, social, or humanitarian problems through direct crisis intervention and/or making referrals to agencies equipped to deal with such problems; and to improve law enforcement and community relations through increasing the quality and quantity of contact between citizens and the Sheriff's Office. The patrol division contains the first responders of the agency and handles the majority of incidents that are reported.

District 1 covers west of the Myakka River, including surrounding waters, and the barrier islands. This district serves a population of over 50,000 citizens. Lt. James Kenville is the district commander. This district also has a deputy assigned to Boca Grande to work in association with the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

District 2 covers areas just north of Midway blvd. It encompasses Murdock and everything east of the Myakka River, and the northern section of Charlotte County. This district is responsible for the fastest-growing 108 square miles of Charlotte County.

Patrol Area
This, the largest of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office districts, includes a territory of 432 square miles, covers all the areas South of the Baron Collier Bridge to the Lee County line, North and East of the Peace River Bridge on Interstate 75 to the DeSoto County and Glades County lines and East to the Glades County line. Our jurisdiction includes the Babcock Webb Management Area a vast State of Florida wildlife preserve that stretches to both the DeSoto and Glades County lines.

The District III Charlotte County Sheriff's Office has within its boundaries four correctional facilities; the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Jail, Charlotte Correctional Institute, Coastal Recovery (Kelly Hall), a Level 6 Juvenile Detention Facility and Crossroads Wilderness Institute, also a Level 6 Juvenile Detention Facility. In addition, there are approximately 20 miles of Interstate 75, the Charlotte County Airport which includes the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office hangar and hundreds of square miles of agricultural lands, for both cattle and farming outside the City of Punta Gorda proper and the residential developments of neighboring bedroom communities. Existing as well within the jurisdiction of District III are Charlotte County's two mental health receiving facilities, CSU and Riverside Behavioral.

Distric Commander
The District Commander for District Three is Lt. Jerry Nicholas. Several other programs are administered out of the District Three office which include: Charlotte County Sheriffs Office Parking Enforcement Officers program, Charlotte County Sheriffs Office Special Deputy program, Charlotte County First-In-Team (a hurricane and natural disaster response team run in conjunction with the Charlotte County Emergency Operations Center), and the Charlotte County Sheriffs Office Honor Guard.

Special Events
The Charlotte County Air Show grows every year, and this year the Navy Blue Angels returned to the show. The projection on attendance for this event was such that three new parking sites were established for this and upcoming shows. This Event drew 50-60,000 people this year over the 2-day period. This entire operation is organized in a partnership with the Charlotte County Airport Development Authority. Manpower for this event is supplied from all Sheriffs Office districts, Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Reserve Deputies and the CCSO Explorer Post Acknowledgement for the Air Show accomplishment set by the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office District III, came when the FAA complimented Air Show organizers saying that this was the best maintained flight line of any air show in the United States.

Along with the Air Show are activities such as the March of Dimes WalkAmerica, the Punta Gorda Block Party, BMX Racing, The Punta Gorda Christmas Parade, The Americanism Parade, Charlotte High School Homecoming, The Greek Festival and the Law Enforcement Torch Run of Special Olympics and the Annual Blessing of the Bikes.

Captain Fred Scott commands District 4. This district is bounded on the north by Hillsborough Blvd., on the east by I-75, the south by the Peace River, and the west by Charlotte Harbor. This area covers 96 miles including 28 miles of the most densely populated areas.
