Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team is an all-volunteer team of highly-trained deputies who are on call 24 hours a day to respond to high-risk law enforcement situations including barricaded suspects, hostage situations, executive protection and warrant services when there is high probability of armed resistance.
The team's mission first and foremost is to protect and to serve the public that they are sworn to defend.
Each of the team members are assigned to other areas of the office, such as Criminal Investigations, Road Patrol, Intelligence, Juvenile, etc. The assignments of each of the team members are their primary duty assignments and they work as a SWAT Team member on an as needed basis.
Additionally we have two officers from the Punta Gorda Police Department, a Charlotte County Fire/EMS Paramedic and a local Physician.
Qualifying for the team is a rigorous process. Members are selected through a competitive process requiring physical fitness tests, firearms proficiency and an oral review board. Every six months, team members must again re-qualify by successfully passing a physical fitness examination. A 12-hour training session is held monthly.
