Volunteer Coordinator

The Volunteer Services Coordinator is responsible for all of the volunteers at the Sheriff’s Office, providing a central coordinating point for effective volunteer management. The goal is to assist volunteer efforts to provide more productive services. The Sheriff's Office has volunteers working in areas ranging from patrolling the roads, waters and skies of Charlotte County to working in various Sheriff's Office facilities. The Volunteer Services Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a liaison with other volunteer-utilizing programs in the community and assisting in community-wide efforts to recognize and promote volunteering. The Volunteer Services Coordinator strives to match the volunteers' skills and abilities with the agency's needs for effective volunteer utilization.

The volunteer opportunities at the Sheriff's Office include the following:

  • Citizen’s Observation Patrol (COPS) – Road Unit Citizens who act as the “eyes and ears” of the Sheriff's Office. They patrol in a Volunteer patrol unit in areas that crime has been reported and report any criminal activity they spot to the on-duty supervisor.
  • Citizen’s Observation Patrol (COPS) – Marine Unit Citizens who act as the “eyes and ears” of the Sheriff's Office on the waters of Charlotte County. They patrol the waters of Charlotte Harbor, the Myakka and Peace Rivers, and the Intercoastal Waterway in a marked Sheriff’s Office vessel.
  • Parking Enforcement Officers Parking Enformcent Officers are citizens who have been trained and authorized to issue parking tickets throughout the county. They operate a marked Volunteer Parking Enforcement unit and are issued uniforms by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Reserve Deputies The Reserve Unit primarily assists with road patrol functions by providing Reserve I and Reserve II deputies to augment the certified full time deputies. The Reserve Unit operate fully marked patrol units while on duty.
  • Explorers Young people ages 14 to 19 that are interested in a future in Law Enforcement can join the Sheriff's Office's Explorer Post.
  • Almost every area of the Sheriff’s Office utilizes volunteers. There are several in the administration section of the office and even in the Aviation Unit.
