Home invasion robber who was shot, arrested.
Oct 30, 2009 -
Detectives of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Warrant Squad arrested 32 year old Keith Allen Sowers, when he was released from a Ft. Myers hospital Thursday. Sowers recovered after being shot during a home invasion Oct. 24 at 21515 Beaverton Ave., Port Charlotte.
Sowers, of 3410 Country Club Lane, Punta Gorda, is charged with First Degree Burglary While Armed, Robbery While Wearing a Mask, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Bond was set at $132,500.
Major Crimes detectives said Sowers and Joshua Eugene Becerril, 29, 173 Monica St., Port Charlotte, went to the home with the intent of taking 69 year old Peter Gilmore's prescription Roxycodone pills. Both men wore stockings over their face, Bercerril held a knife at Gilmore's face and demanded the pills; Sowers was armed with a tire iron. Gilmore's son, James McGlown, 25, ran into a bedroom where handguns were kept with Sowers in pursuit. McGlown was struck in the head with the tire iron and he then shot Sowers in the stomach.
Both men fled the home; Bercerril was arrested later at his home. Sowers ran a couple blocks before knocking on a door of a home saying he was shot and to call an ambulance. He was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital and was released Thursday. Detectives said this was a home invasion, not a drug deal gone bad, and the shooting was justifiable. Both men remain in the Charlotte County Jail.
